Summary

There are approximately 40,000 species of fishes living around the world, yet scientists estimate that there are many unidentified fish species as well. Fifteen thousand species are freshwater species,1 and hundreds of thousands of fish, mammal and insect species — 228,450 — are classified as marine animals.2 Just over 2,000 marine species are protected under the United States Endangered Species Act (ESA).3 Show References
