Project Description

The mission of Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is to rescue food that would otherwise be wasted to feed the hungry through the use of technology. What make us unique? • RLC fills the gap left by existing food rescue organizations that have minimum pound requirements upwards of 100 lbs for food that is donated, servicing restaurants that want to donate food but have less food waste to donate. RLC has no minimum requirement. • RLC fills this gap by using an innovative and efficient method of crowdsourcing the transportation to the public through a web application coded on Ruby on Rails. This technology allows for a flatter organization with less bureaucracy and a smaller professional staff that can coordinate the activities of thousands of volunteers in real time with just in time results. • Because RLC does not use trucks and vans, RLC contributes to less greenhouse gases as volunteers rescue food along the way home from work or to class. • This efficient method allows for RLC’s cost per pound efficiency to be industry leading, at 10 cents per pound vs. 25 cents per pound average across other food rescue organizations. • RLC’s model is thus scalable, and has expanded to 16 cities across the United States.
