RAHAMA

For 16 years, we have supported and educated families experiencing domestic violence. We are proud to be both a Muslim and women-led nonprofit. Though we cater specifically to Muslim women, our doors are open to everyone. RAHAMA was started in July 2006 as the result of a survey given to Muslim women at a Western New York community event. The survey unexpectedly uncovered their concerns about domestic violence. As a result of this survey RAHAMA started as a grassroots organization that spread awareness about the problem of domestic violence, providing education on the rights of Muslim women to social service and law enforcement agencies that deal with domestic violence. RAHAMA also collaborates with local domestic violence agencies to insure culturally appropriate emotional and spiritual support to survivors of domestic violence. After a hiatus due to the professional development of its organizers, RAHAMA decided to become a 501(c)3 organization. In 2016, RAHAMA officially became an not-for-profit organization whose staff and volunteers continue to provide education to the community as well as individual and group counseling, case management and other supportive services to survivors of domestic violence. RAHAMA has broadened its mission to include seeking to provide discrete transitional housing services to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence.
