As a child growing up in small Bible churches, one of the highlights of the year was the annual Missions Conference that was held, usually sometime in October. I enjoyed going and hearing of the work God was doing in other countries. After all, ours was a “Christian country†and we needed to send people overseas to share the Gospel of Christ. The songs we sang -- Send the Light, We've a Story to Tell, So Send I You, Go Ye into All the World and others, were brought out each year to sing several times along with a theme song and then put away again until the following year or until we had a missionary speaker come. I loved these songs, but it seemed we only sang them when “missionaries†were present.
Even though we are taught better and we know better, we have given the light-bearer job to the “full-time†or “paid†missionaries or staff of our churches and have ourselves neglected the responsibility that God gave to us when He said, “You are the light of the world...Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.†You might say we have allowed our lights to be dimmed. But that is not what God wants for us. We are to be like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.
Paul, in his letter to the church at Galatia, wrote about his experience following his conversion, how that his reputation preceded him as he went to the various regions. They knew he had once persecuted the Christians, but now as they got to know Paul, they “glorified God†in him because he was shining forth God's light. He wasn't just sending the light, but he was being the light.
You and I have a great challenge -- and that is to Be the light. We need to be the light of Christ when it comes to our dealings and interactions with other people. We need to be the light in every opportunity to share what Christ has done for us. We need to be the light in taking the Light to a sin-darkened world -- whether it is at Wal-Mart or behind prison doors.

Where We Work
What We Do
During the summer of 1978, Ron Goossen was preparing to enter his junior year of high school. The previous spring he had enrolled in an offset printing class at the area vo-tech school. He knew he was going to need a project. For the previous two summers, he had been serving as a Summer Missionary with CEF in Northeast Oklahoma. He had a concern about the kids he had taught during the summers. Some were taking correspondence courses, but others would fall by the wayside if they didn't keep up with the lessons. Some would never enroll at all.
