La Maraña, Corp.

La Maraña works at the intersection of participatory design, community planning, and sustainable territorial development in Puerto Rico. For over 10 years, we have accompanied communities, organizations, and allies in understanding, designing, and managing the territories we co-inhabit through collaborative processes that center local knowledge and collective decision-making. We believe sustainable development is only possible when communities actively participate in shaping the decisions that impact their daily lives, including food access, mobility, water systems, public spaces, and environmental resilience. Our work addresses interconnected challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and inequitable infrastructure investment by creating socially equitable, culturally relevant, and environmentally sustainable solutions. Our three programmatic areas include Landscape + Food, which supports nature-based solutions, reforestation, green infrastructure, and local food systems; Co-Design + Management, which strengthens community capacity to plan and implement sustainable projects; and the Institute for Sustainable Puerto Rico, a collaborative platform for applied research, innovation, and community-driven sustainability initiatives. Through participatory methodologies such as community mapping, imagination workshops, design labs, and leadership training, we equip communities with tools to shape their futures. We believe community intelligence is a powerful resource and that design can be an act of collective empowerment, fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable territories across Puerto Rico.
