Our Mission

Inspired by the spirit of Kris Kringle, Operation Kringle is a nonprofit organization that embodies, celebrates, and encourages simple acts of kindness all year long. We harness the power of generosity to spark joy among people facing hardship and to offer gratitude to those serving others.

Who We Are

Operation Kringle reflects the generosity – both given and received – that runs through the remarkable story of the Uy family. Before Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge in 1975, air force pilot Peng and U.S. embassy secretary Mareine found themselves among the Cambodians allies evacuated by the U.S. As they settled down in Long Beach, California, the young couple focused on a college education, jobs, and on securing safe passage for members of their extended family still living in Cambodia. From this foundation of generous spirit, deep commitment to family, and hard work – the Uys created a life of happiness and abundance. When COVID-19 began to engulf the world and health care workers found themselves on the front lines of an unprecedented crisis, my thoughts went immediately to the amazing people at LAC USC Medical Center and their compassionate care for my father at the end of his life. With kindness and humanity, these doctors, nurses, and hospital staff had not only treated my dad as a patient, but also as a person. A year later these same people faced the unimaginable challenges of COVID, and it felt important to do as they had done for us – to reach out to them as people, to offer thanks for all they had done for us and encouragement for the battle they were waging. Writing that letter was tough. It required me to recall the greatest sadness I have ever experienced. But as I wrote, I started to feel something new – a little bit of light. And by the time I pushed “send,” I was beginning to see that expressing my gratitude could bring solace. I kept going. More letters to more people working at more hospitals in more cities across the country. Meals for those doctors, nurses, and staff members. Messages of warmth and hope for families and children being treated in hospitals. As quarantine extended into spring and summer, I realized that these simple acts of kindness were the perfect way to honor the memory of my dad. With his generous spirit and big heart, he was always spreading smiles and good cheer. Today, the activities of Operation Kringle extend support and kindness to frontline workers, members of the military serving overseas, children and families facing illness, students seeking educational opportunities, and people who are currently unhoused. We are just getting started and I like to think that my father would be proud.
