Palmetto Literacy Council

We provide free tutoring for children and adults who struggle with basic reading, writing, and/or math. Tutoring occurs in the local libraries. Our sessions are typically one hour twice each week for all students. For adults, tutoring may happen in one 2-hour session per week. Our students are 5 years old to 60 years old, so far. We opened our doors on August 1, 2019. We provide our services throughout Horry County, South Carolina only. Our tutors are volunteers, trained, and get background checks. The materials are provided to our tutors with training on how to use the science-based materials. Instruction is designed to meet the individual needs of each student. We are always looking for volunteers and students. We want to improve literacy rates in our community. Donations are always welcome. We also want to reach out to our entire community about literacy, we have a monthly newsletter and a quarterly Authors' Panel. The newsletter is about what we do, literacy, book reviews, strategies to use for reading, writing, or math, and articles about words. Our Authors' Panels introduce our community to South Carolinian (we may expand the area) authors and people who are doing work in the area of literacy. The Authors' Panels are on Zoom and can be accessed anywhere that has internet access. The discussions are interesting, engaging, and entertaining.
