Our Mission

Teachers in Space, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization which stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by providing their teachers with extraordinary space science experiences and industry connections. Our professional development workshops for STEM teachers include personal and experimental flight opportunities, hands-on work with data sensors and remote device control, opportunities to meet and interact with scientists and developers at NASA and commercial space companies, and unique teaching materials and design contests to take back to the classroom. Teachers In Space, Inc. sparks a transfer of passion for space science and exploration from teachers to their students, preparing and encouraging those students to pursue further education and exciting, rewarding careers in the emerging space industry.

Who We Are

TIS has secured a flight on Firefly Aerospace’s Alpha launch vehicle to send an educational 3u Cubesat (miniature satellite), “Serenity,” into low Earth orbit. Serenity will carry a high school radiation measurement experiment and a university blockchain communications experiment. Anyone with an amateur radio license can receive communications from Serenity regarding the satellite’s health, position, and collected data. YOU can interact with Serenity while it is in orbit! Check our website for details: https://teachers-in-space.com/serenity/ Build a Raspberry Pi based radio receiver for under $100 and 2hours' work: https://teachers-in-space.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Lesson-1-Building-a-satellite-receiver.pdf In addition to Firefly Aerospace, our 3u 3D-printed cubesats can fly on high-altitude balloons, Perlan 2 stratospheric glider, suborbital spaceflights with Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, or orbital flights with SpaceX and others, thus increasing the program’s potential reach. The Perlan Project sponsored TIS in 2015 and 2016 at $7500 for an introductory workshop for 30 educators to learn how to fly experiments on Perlan 2, then $35,000 for six biweekly online sessions to support 40 schools in a competition to produce 10 built experiments for flight on Perlan 2. Orbital cubesats are typically expensive to build, launch and manage. Over time we have developed solutions which are both effective and amazingly low-cost.
